Things You Might Not Know About the Maid of Honor

Maid of Honor

Choosing your maid of honor is a big deal. They could be your best friend or a family member, but will always be someone you cannot imagine your wedding day without. Choosing your maid of honor can be an emotionally challenging task. You can only choose one very special person, but you might have ten other special people in line. This is not about the best and least best. This is about an important role and a lot of responsibility. There are just a few things you might not know about the maid of honor.

The Maid of Honor is a Planner

The maid of honor does far more than just stand beside the bride during the ceremony. This is an important role with many duties. This special person will assist with wedding planning and provide support during the entire process. When you go dress shopping, need help picking up a bouquet or putting together some wedding favors, the maid of honor is at your service. This special person must be mature, a problem solver, organized, good with budgeting, able to manage a team and experienced with counseling others.

She is a Hostess

The maid of honor is responsible for planning and hosting a bridal shower and bachelorette party with the bridesmaids. She will require a little help with creating the guest list, but almost every other element will be up to her imagination.

The Maid of Honor isn’t Always Family

The maid of honor is not always a family member. Many brides feel the pressure to give this role to a family member over a friend. If your best friend is more qualified, it is completely acceptable. Remember, this person must be mature, a problem solver, organized, good with budgeting, able to manage a team and experienced with counseling others. You may choose many bridesmaids, but there is only one maid of honor. Think about the duties and the role when choosing the person to fill the position.

She Dresses Differently

All of the bridesmaids usually match, but the maid of honor is set apart from the rest. Her dress should coordinate with the wedding party, but the color, fabric and even the silhouette might be a little different. Her bouquet should also be designed a little differently.

She Does Not Require an Escort

The procession can get confusing, especially with a large wedding party that includes bridesmaids, groomsmen, page boys, flower girls and a ring bearer. However and whoever is all up to you, since this is your special day. However, it is important to note that the best man does not need to escort the maid of honor, nor do the groomsmen need to escort the bridesmaids. It is very common for the maid of honor to walk without an escort and lead the way up and down the aisle for the bridesmaids.

Maid of Honor

She Gives a Speech

You might have heard of the father of the bride speech and the best man speech. The maid of honor is responsible for delivering a heart-felt speech of her own during the reception. The speech usually ends with a toast and should never take more than a couple of minutes.

The Maid of Honor Dances with the Best Man

Traditionally, the maid of honor dances with the best man after the first dance and the parents dance, and before the dance floor is open for the guests. This can create some issues for a best man that is married to or dating someone other than your maid of honor. You should speak to your wedding party about this special dance prior to putting it on the timeline.
